Presentation Title: Childhood Obesity, Human Rights & Corporate Social Responsibility Presentation Synopsis: This presentation will consider the role and responsibilities of major food industry actors in tackling the current childhood obesity crisis. ‘Corporate social responsibility’ is a very familiar phrase, and corporations are generally keen to demonstrate that they are, indeed, socially responsible ‘citizens.’ However, bearing in mind the scale and consequences of the current obesity epidemic, and the relative ineffectiveness of voluntary industry action in this area it is, perhaps, unsurprising that some commentators are now arguing in favour of extending the reach of international human rights law, to encompass this stakeholder group. Using childhood obesity as the primary reference point, the interesting question of whether or not it is now appropriate to reframe corporate social responsibility in the language of human rights obligations will be explored. It is hoped that this presentation will generate some interesting discussion about the relative role and responsibilities of both government and the food industry in tackling what has become one of the most significant public health challenges of our times.
