Disgrifiad
This exhibition was dedicated to textile narratives of struggles against violence, injustice, oppression and forgetting; from Wales, Chile, Mexico, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Spain, Colombia and Germany. The core of the exhibition consisted of textiles from the international Conflict Textiles collection. Additionally, there are two thematic sections, with textiles from Wales and Mexico, which speak to the topics of conflict, injustice, solidarity and protest. The Wales section was comprised of Welsh quilts and sewn banners from local artists and activists on topics of peace, protest and solidarity. The Mexico section included embroidered handkerchiefs, which have been created by the ‘Embroidering for Peace’ movement, expressing local resistance against the current violence and impunity in Mexico and the solidarity of people around the world with the victims and bereaved of this violence. An associated programme of activities such as textile workshops, film screenings, and roundtable discussions about textile art, politics, violence and resistance took place from January to May 2017. Events involved contributions from, and reach out to, Welsh textile artists, community groups interested in textiles and/or peace, schools in Mid-Wales, as well as Aberystwyth University student societies and academic departments, including the School of Arts.
