The conference assessed the progress and challenges for the implementation of the Welsh Government’s Employability Plan - which outlined its approach to tackling joblessness and skills development - as well as to consider what further action may be needed to be taken going forward. Further sessions considered the implementation of ‘Working Wales’ and the required actions to ensure success, such as: encouraging lifelong learning, engaging with employers to ensure training providers meet skills needs, the role of apprenticeships and the need to deliver work-ready graduates to employers. Delegates also examined the new ‘Economic Contract’ - and looked at the key issues around employer engagement and uptake, the resources that may need to be put in place to underpin its success, and priorities for supporting the promotion of inclusive working practices. Those in attendance also looked at economic trends and issues that have the potential to have a significant impact on the Welsh economy, namely: the impact of Brexit, the automation of labour, the UK productivity challenge, the growth of self employment and the shift toward a greener economy.
