Diddordebau ymchwil

My research lies at the intersection of International Relations Theory, Political Theory and Security Studies. While topically diverse, my research gravitates to two theoretical foci: 1) Emergence of normative knowledge out of reflected social practices and 2) The role of politics and political values in pacifying conflict and transitioning out of security-induced emergency politics. I have been pursuing these interests via the study of past political thinkers, most notably Judith N. Shklar, Hannah Arendt, Hans Morgenthau, Stanley Hoffmann and Raymond Aron, understanding their ideas in their original contexts and in the context of present day.

Proffil

I have been in the Department of International Politics since 2009, since 2013 as permanent member of staff. My research and teaching span across Political Theory, International Relations and Security Studies. I'm keen to speak to both Politics and IR, ideally facilitating a conversation between the two. I'm especially interested in (international) political theory that is normatively oriented, with a global outlook, yet grounded in actual political histories. This also feeds into my interest in ethical, societal and normative aspects of security politics, human rights, liberalism and internationalism. My method utilises history of ideas and I specialise in the 20th century European and American political thought. A number of my optional (UG and PG) modules are research-led, but I also enjoy teaching (UG and PG) core modules, taking pride in successfully delivering ‘theory content’ also to students who are more empirically minded.

I'm a member of the editorial board of Society (Springer), after I had been an Associate Editor of the journal International Relations (Sage) for five years. I have acted as peer reviewer for most major Politics and IR journals and publishers, as well as a referee for UKRI.

Dysgu

Currently I convene and teach the following modules (not all are on offer every academic year):

Undergraduate: IP2-32220 Political Theory; IQ2-31729 Justice, Order, Human Rights; IP20120 International Relations: Perspectives and Debates (core).

Master's: IPM1120 Critical Security Studies: Contemporary Theories; IPM2120 Research in Politics and International Studies; IPM0520 International Politics (core).

PhD Supervision: I have supervised eight PhD projects to successful completion and am currently supervising two PhD projects. My areas of supervision are: International Relations (with strong theoretical component), Security Studies (with strong theoretical or ethical component), International Political Theory / Political Theory. I am especially open to projects that combine ethical and sociological approaches.

Cyfrifoldebau

In 2023-24 I am having Aberystwyth University Research Boost Leave and do not have any administrative responsibilities.
