His research has also been concerned with aspects of stratigraphy and chronology, especially radiocarbon dating, during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition. He has published more than 160 scientific papers and other contributions, including three Quaternary textbooks: Reconstructing Quaternary Environments (with John Lowe), 1st edition 1984, 2nd edition 1997, 3rd edition 2015; Late Quaternary Environmental Change: Physical and Human Perspectives (with Martin Bell), 1st edition 1992, 2nd edition 2005; and Quaternary Dating Methods, 2005.He is Emeritus Professor of Quaternary Science in the University of Wales, Lampeter, and in 2014 was awarded the James Croll Medal by the Quaternary Research Association of Great Britain.
