Richard Shipman

Richard has a BSc in Computer Science (1998) from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and an MPhil in Qualitative Reasoning and Simulation from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Prior to joining the department, Richard studied industrial computing at GlosCAT and worked as a Simulator Development Engineer for the Central Electricity Generating Board at the Nuclear Power Training Centre at Oldbury on Severn, and a Vax systems manager and simulator engineer in the refuelling safety case team in Barnwood, Gloucester for National Power, National Power (Nuclear) and Nuclear Electric during the privatisation of the electricity generating industry in the UK.  Due to downsizing, Richard then pivoted to his other love, Sound Engineering, going to work for the BBC at Radio Gloucestershire.

He joined the staff at Aberystwyth university running tomographic reconstructions of the upper atmosphere for the Atmospheric Physics group in the Physics department, mapping the ozone hole.  He then crossed the car park to the Computer Science to register for the degree course, graduating and progressing onto the teaching staff bringing his industrial experience to the department.

He has taught in Singapore for the University of Wales, Aberystwyth as well as teaching in Aberystwyth.  He was employed for a year for a spin out company from the Computer Science department, and then returned to teaching.   He is a member of the BCS, and spends a lot of his time volunteering, having spent over 25 years with the Corris Railway, finally stepping down from being the Director of Operations in 2025.  He now spends his spare time volunteering on narrowboats for the disabled, and providing sound and lighting equipment and expertise for local groups, theatres and festivals.
