This article uses Chinese and English sources to investigate the establishment and transformation of the Burmese Chinese community in this multi - ethnic colonial state from the mid - nineteenth century onwards, with special attention to the Chinatown in Rangoon. Using the Governor - General of India’s visit to Burma as a case study, this paper examines the various responses from the Chinese community. It also analyses the Chinese community’s internal structure, conflicts, transformation and its interactions with the colonial elites in the 1920s. This article shows that Chinese Burmese not only share common characteristics with the other Chinese in Southeast Asia but also keep their own unique traditions and colonial experiences.
