Crynodeb
Examines the role of the Bute family and estate in the social, political, economic and industrial history of Cardiff and the south Wales coalfield. The Bute estate, held by the family from 1766 to 1947, was of central importance in the social, political and cultural life of Glamorgan. Even more significant, both to the history of Wales and to the history of aristocratic participation in economic development was the family's crucial contribution to the rise of the port of Cardiff, and to the growth of the South Wales iron and coal trade.
