In this study, the authors present an extended four-component model-based decomposition method by using a modified cross-scattering matrix. The scattering matrix of a rotated dihedral corner reflector is used to generate the modified cross-scattering matrix which accounts for the cross-polarisation power generated by the oriented dihedral structures. The orientation angles of the buildings are used to characterise this modified cross-scattering matrix which makes the proposed decomposition more feasible and effective. The effectiveness of the proposed decomposition method lies in its capability to discriminate between the cross-polarisation power generated by the oriented man-made structures and the vegetation. This makes the proposed method more suitable for the classification of oriented urban areas as compared with the existing modelbased decomposition methods.
