Crynodeb

Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck is a modern classic and one of the most influential plays in the history of European theatre. It is a precursor of practically all major modernist movements (from Naturalism to Expressionism, Absurdism to Docudrama) and an enduring inspiration for new generations of dramatists, theatre directors, as well as musicians. This study explores the social, political and philosophical themes of the play by placing the work and its author in their historical contexts. The study provides a critical engagement with the play's fragmentary form and critical socio-political content, examining the revolutionary dimensions of Büchner’s political and creative practice as well as modern approaches to the play in performance.
