A fine grain layer is often generated in the vicinity of friction interfaces in metal forming processes. Two important contributory mechanisms responsible for this process are plastic strain and temperature. This paper presents a theoretical investigation into the effect of friction on the heat generation in the continued quasi-static plane strain compression of a thin metal strip between two parallel dies. The strip material is rigid perfectly plastic. The constant friction law is adopted. An approximate solution is given in Lagrangian coordinates. The original initial/boundary value problem at large strain reduces to the standard initial/boundary value problem for the nonhomogeneous heat conduction equation
