The waveguides of photoluminescent silicon-rich silicon dioxide were described. These waveguides were patterned by triangular two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals to give higher-order photonic bandgaps occuring within the luminescence band of the core material. It was shown that the photonic crystal modification of the photoluminescence spectrum allows identification of angle-tuned photonic band-gaps, in close agreement with 2D plane wave expansion and finite-difference time domain simulations. The importance of these findings for the development of integrated optical circuit based on silicon-compatible microelectronics was also discussed.
