Crynodeb

Analyses the critical language used in reviewing exhibitions at the Dudley Gallery, London, in the periodical press c1860-72, particularly in relation to the work of Simeon Solomon. The language is compared to that found in medical discourses on mental illness, such as Maudsley on eccentricity and madness and to later cross-disciplinary works of cultural analysis, such as Nordau's Degeneration. The chapter demonstrates the relationship between art criticism and other social discourses in the final decades of the nineteenth century.
