Crynodeb
This work features twelve stories, set at home and abroad, mixing realism with hints of the supernatural and comedy with some dark themes. In the title story, a student searches for an ancient song that kills everyone who hears it; in "Sleevenotes" a rock critic tells of his painful encounter with punk group Colin Crab and the Ptomaines, while in "Assassin" two men, one eager and the other reluctant, wait in a mountain pass somewhere in the Middle East for the potentate they must murder. These are not the standard autobiographical stories of sensitive adolescents discovering love or learning to cope with the death of a grandparent - although love and death play their part here. Rather, they show men and women trying to make sense of a world that is often absurd and sometimes dangerous, a world so funny and tragic that we recognize it with a start as the one we live in.
