Background: The relationship between personality and emotional intelligence has received little attention, particularly with respect to culture and gender.

Objectives: To examine 1) relations between multicultural personality traits and trait emotional intelligence, and 2) influences of culture, gender and age on trait emotional intelligence.

Method: Measures included the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ) and the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS).The sample consisted of 60 participants aged 19-40 stratified by culture (UK/Welsh; European; Other).
Results: No associations between the MPQ and EIS (r=- 0.06, p=0.31) or effects of culture, gender and age on EIS scores (ps>0.05) were observed. However, while not significant, females and respondents classified as Other trended towards higher EIS scores.

Conclusion: No relationship was found between the MPQ and EIS, but culture and gender were noted as having some influence on EIS scores warranting further investigation into possible mediating effects. Potential cultural differences in emotional intelligence are discussed in light of individualism-collectivism cultural syndrome.
