Crynodeb

‘The Storm Cycle‘ is a long-term theatre and performance research project, initiated in collaboration with National Theatre Wales (NTW), through propositions developed and publicly presented at various scales across Wales, within Brookes’ three year engagement as Associate Artist to the company.

‘The Storm Cycle‘ is constituted as a series of publicly commissioned and staged performance works that explore context-specific performative and artistic approaches that might support a new address to current issues and perceptions of truth and personal and social uncertainty and unrest.

The project builds on the author's research and expertise in located, multi-site and intermedial performance practices, with an initial focus on the approaches and achievements realised within his long-term collaborative relationship with NTW. The project’s initial aim being to draw out and build upon the achievements of previous work with the company, to explore new forms and practices that might challenge and respond to current needs and ideas – in ways that could perhaps open up further artistic and production possibilities within the portfolio of production practices available to NTW on entering its second decade of development, as the researcher’s previous work for the company is widely recognise to have contributed to its first. The ultimate aim being to then further explore and apply aspects of the resulting developmental propositions at increasing scales, and across formal and cultural contexts engaged through the researcher’s broader international artistic research.

Research questions include:
In what ways might located and context-specific live art practices be engaged to expand and enhance approaches to the large-scale staging of discursive and narrative theatrical material?
In what ways can advanced techniques of alternative performance practice reveal approaches to the staging of additional forms of writing, such as philosophical texts, or newspaper reportage?
How might approaches to spatial design and contemporary media and technology use be employed to support the form and dramaturgy of such stagings, and to enhance an understanding and appreciation of their event for audiences?
In what ways can long-term practice-based research inform and extend the production practices of theatre-making for both professional and public benefit?
