Towards a Strategic Framework of Mobile Knowledge Management

Organizations are challenged to seek efficient and effective ways of implementing knowledge management strategies in an increasingly mobile environment. Building upon our CLIC (conservation, leverage, integration, and combination) framework of mobile knowledge management (mKM) strategies, we investigate the implementation of mKM strategies from a system perspective. An attempt is also made to formulate a decision table based upon three dimensions of knowledge properties (tacitness, location, and mobility) and then the best knowledge management strategy under each scenario is proposed. Finally, different types of hierarchies of mKM systems are identified and the selection of an appropriate hierarchy for different types of companies is elaborated. The paper provides a solid foundation for future research in mKM as well as a valuable guidance for practical managers to strategically manage mobile knowledge assets.
