This article contextualizes the contributions to this special number of the Welsh History Review on Wales and the First World War by examining debates about enlistment, military tribunals, the responses of Protestant Nonconformity to mobilization and the experiences of recruits and conscripts in the armed forces. It also considers the Home Front and civil liberties, and whether war was an emancipatory experience for women. It emphasizes the diversity of experiences according to geographical location, social class, gender and nationality. It also addresses the changing relationship of Wales to the British state.
