Since the 1950s, the Unruly Woman was the mainstay of male-dominated humour with portrayals of women as large-and-in-charge battle-axes. In the 1980s, Alternative Comedy brought with it a more humane representation as opportunities for women writers and actors emerged.Previously absent, a Welsh version of the trope then materialized. This relatively late appearance resulted in a paucity of knowledge about how she came into being and how she has evolved to the present day.
The commentary element of this submission considers the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the manifestations of these characters, demonstrating an organic development that has not only served to increase their comedic potential but allowed them to become a mainstay of Welsh humour, and subsequently, via their increased popularity, introduce new and influence existing comedy to a wider audience.
The thesis is centred on close textual analysis of sequences from case studies, applying research into relevant comedic writing and performances, with specific focus on the culture of the valleys of South Wales.
Each chapter addresses a stage in this evolutionary process, beginning with the influence of the feminine on the Battle-axe as she becomes Formidable, continuing through the significance of discontent as she becomes Transgressive, and concluding with the otherness that allows her to become Incongruent.
The creative element of the submission is a comedy novel, Viva España, the embodiment of the research in action wherein representatives of the above tropes rebel against the perceived patriarchy. The humour is generated by their dialogue and actions in dealing with the absurd situations in which they find themselves both in Wales and abroad.
