Recent research has suggested a more inclusive turn in masculinity. Despite this, harmful practices continue to be documented surrounding nighttime economy. Research focusing on masculinity is usually partaken by men. Therefore, there appeared a niche in this research, for a woman to research men during their nighttime drinking practices. The study utilised an Ethnographic design, combined with interviews to explore how masculinity is constructed during the lads’ night out by both participants and the researcher. Seventeen nights out were observed in total from seven groups. The researcher accompanied groups on their night out and made field notes based on these interactions. Participants ranged in backgrounds- from friendship groups to competitive sports teams. A thematic inspired Foucauldian discourse analysis was conducted on both interviews and fieldnotes. Three key spaces for the enactment of masculinity were established: the rave, the club and the pre-drinks. These spaces were explored for what they enable/disable in masculinity. Through exploring the data, within the theoretical framework of Butler’s performativity, social practice theory and Foucauldian understandings of subject positions, discourse and Heterotopias; masculinity is understood as a fluid/shifting performance, which can be taken up or denied dependent on acceptable practice and norms within a specific space.
