Crynodeb

Ludens is an adaptation of the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi. The novel transforms the story of how Gwydion tricked Pryderi and stole his pigs into a cyberpunk-inspired crime narrative set in a dystopian, urbanised Wales. The aim of the novel is to present a new retelling of the Fourth Branch to a new audience who may not have experienced the original tale. The accompanying critical commentary includes a reflection on the writing process of the novel and an examination of Math ap Mathonwy through the lens of Disability Studies. Math’s inability to remove his feet from the lap of a virgin unless during the time of war is a significant aspect of the character. Yet, besides questions regarding the symbolism of Goewin’s role, no answer has been sought as to why Math is dependent on his foot-holder. Both the novel and its accompanying critical commentary set to establish Math as a disabled character. This is a previously unexplored reading of the character and broadens the scope of scholarship of the Fourth Branch and the Mabinogion.
