The Burning Bracken is a work of eco-fiction set in a fictionalised, contemporary Mid Wales. The novel is inspired by ‘new nature writing’ and represents a contribution to ‘new nature fiction’. Its narrative explores contemporary debates about the British landscape, examining tensions between conflicting and competing interpretations of how the landscape should be seen and used. The novel addresses tensions between country and city, environmental degradation and the ongoing collapse in British wildlife, arguments for rewilding, and the increasing pressures faced by upland farmers. The novel also addresses spiritual approaches to the environment, continuing to question what landscape means and how we should interact with it. The novel is situated within the traditions of Welsh writing in English, rural Welsh literature, and Welsh border literature, sharing concerns specific to each of these.
