There is no doubt that information is knowledge and very essential in sports performance and development. This study explores the information needs of coaches, athletes and sport administrators in Nigeria that is necessary to achieve high sports performance. The study specifically examines the extent of availability of sports information resources and services in Nigeria, their adequacy (or lack thereof), as well as, the challenges associated with providing the resources and services in contemporary Nigeria. This study adopted three main approaches before drawing its conclusion. First, it reviewed the relevant literature on information needs of coaches, athletes and sport administrators with emphasis and focus on Nigeria. Second, it adopted a qualitative research method using questionnaire and semi-structured interview to obtain information from 25 respondents made up of coaches, athletes and sports administrators from Nigeria, Aberystwyth UK and Nigeria London 2012 Olympics contingents. Third, it applied thematic analytical approach to analyze the data obtained from the field.
The outcome of the analyses indicates that information needs are important irrespective of the environment although with some similarities and divergence in the availability of information resources and the adequacy. Similarly, the information needed is generally obvious among respondents. On the other hand, divergence was obvious in the availability and adequacy of sports information due to level of exposure and development of the country.
Among the numerous outcomes of the study, library service in Nigeria faces huge challenges due to inadequate funding, tools/equipment, infrastructure and power supply.
Recommendations are given on how these challenges need to be addressed for improved library services in providing adequate relevant information to coaches, athletes and sport administrators in Nigeria aimed at achieving high sports performance
