Description

To date research efforts related to livestock systems in the highlands of the Andean region have focussed solely on improving the yield of pasture and animal products. There is a high risk that this type of intensification will to lead to environmental and ecological damage. Our research collaboration is focussed on developing alternative approaches that prioritise nutrient use efficiency alongside economic, environmental and social sustainability. Discussions highlighted there is a global dearth of data regarding enteric methane emissions from alpacas, and that IBERS has both the animals and research capability (methane chambers; considered to be the measurement gold standard) to lead on addressing this in partnership with research organisations in the Andean region.
