Personal profile

Profile

I am Professor and Head of Psychology, with a Chair in the Psychology Department at Aberystwyth University.  My research involves applying social, environmental and health psychology to understanding and improving relationships between the built environment and transportation and health. I am Co-Director of two funded research centres, the Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research and the Transport and Health Integrated Research Network. I am also co-director of the Aberystwyth University Research Centre for Transport and Mobility (CeTrAM). I have authored over 60 peer reviewed journal articles, over 25 book chapters and have 5 books. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. I am incoming Chair of the Universities Transport Studies Group (UTSG).  I have been an executive committee member of the British Society of Gerontology (BSG; 2015-20) and founder and co-lead the Special Interest Group at BSG on mobilities and transport in later life. My research has involved over 125 conference presentations including over 60 invited International and national presentations at conferences (including 5 keynotes) and I work closely with government, charities and third sector organisations and am keen on public engagement to get my research out into the real world. I have presented at two British Science Festivals (2008 and 2016) and written many articles for the general public.  I have appeared on television and radio on a variety of ageing, mobility and built environment topics. I am Editor-in-Chief for Elsevier’s Journal of Transport & Health, Section Editor for Cogent Gerontology and on the editorial board for Age Cymru’s EnvisAGE and Elsevier’s Research in Transportation Business & Management journals.

Research interests

I have two main areas of interest (1) environmental gerontology, examining relationships between environment and health in later stages of life, including road user safety in later life, giving-up driving and creating age friendly neighbourhoods and communities; (2) transport and health, including the social aspects of transport and mobility. I have worked on over 45 research projects as PI or Co-I totalling over £26m research income. I am currently Principal Investigator and co-Director of 2 Welsh Government funded projects: (1) the £3m Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research (CADR) project to bring together research in ageing with policy and practice across Wales and; (2) the £400k Transport and Health Integrated Research Network (THINK) to bring together those working in health and transport research from different disciplines.
