Financial Support for Visits to the UK

Dr Ivan Argatov from the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) will visit the UK in June 2025. The aim of the proposed visit is to extend a strong research collaboration between the Applicant and the Visitor with younger colleagues from Aberystwyth University (Dr Adam Vellender and Dr Daniel Peck) and research groups led by applied mathematician Dr Michael Nieves (Keele University) and mechanical engineer and materials scientist Prof. Vadim Silberschmidt (Loughborough University). Common scientific interests of the three research groups are in mathematical modelling of important complex mechanical phenomena such as waves and damage propagation (including fracture, wear, decohesion) in functionally graded (heterogeneous or stratified) media with imperfect interfaces, subsurface and surface metabarriers. Our mathematical modelling will lead to a substantial impact for applications in the areas of earthquake mitigation, damage control, design of “smart” composite materials for tribological and biomedical applications, and overall this research is contributing to building a secure and resilient world.
