Abstract
A visit to Finland evokes strong feels of belonging and yearning, and '17' attempts to convey these. In the making of '17' the author seeks to investigate the tensions between situated specific experience and 'creative treatment' as a means of communicating the ineffable and meta-lingual whilst remaining within the film-language parameters of documentary film. '17' does this by counterpoising a series of cinematic sketches in different modes; agitprop, poetic, comic, amateur. It also does it by establishing a geographic location, and by interspersing that location with temporal and linguistic 'elsewheres' and 'elsewhens'.
