title = "A gene-discovery approach to identify new players in the regulation of cell wall composition and cross-linking in grasses",

note = "Abstract: The energy-rich polysaccharides of grass cell walls hold great promise for the production of renewable and sustainable bioenergy. The general hypothesis is that the composition and cross-linking of cell wall polymers determines the efficiency by which the cell wall biomass can be processed to release its sugars for biofuel production. Therefore, a better understanding of the factors that determine and control the dynamic cell wall architecture during plant growth and development is essential to fully explore the {\~A}†{\^a}€{\texttrademark}??energy-potential{\~A}†{\^a}€{\texttrademark}?{\~A}‚{\^A} of grasses and to start engineering and breeding varieties optimized for conversion efficiency. Due to the available genetic tools and its close phylogenetic relationship with a number of dedicated energy grasses, maize is ideally positioned for the discovery of new cell wall related genes and the translation of gene-function discovery to more genetically recalcitrant species such as Miscanthus. Aiming to identify genes involved in the control and remodelling of the cell wall architecture, differential expression profiling between an actively elongating maize internode versus an internode that just ceased elongation was performed using Maize 47K Oligonucleotide microarrays. Analysis revealed a number of interesting genes expected to be involved in cell wall related processes. Selected candidate genes will be functionally tested for involvement in biomass associated traits such as yield and processability. This study provides underpinning research for the establishment of Miscanthus as a renewable and sustainable bioenergy source and will feed into the Miscanthus breeding programme based at IBERS. ; Plant Cell Walls ; Conference date: 02-08-2009 Through 07-08-2009",
