Abstract
This article aims to contribute to the understanding of the nature of ‘Commissioners’ by examining four Commissioner offices that have been established in Wales since the devolution settlement entered into force in 1999. These are the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, the Welsh Language Commissioner, and the Future Generations Commissioner. The article explores common features and distinctions between the four and concludes that while there are some similarities between these offices particularly due to the Welsh devolved context itself, it is also important to be aware of significant differences between them in terms of specific aspects and in relation to their general character
