Abstract

An approach to estimating the butt tensile strength of a joint that bonds two rigid adherends together with a soft adhesive is developed. The approach is based on the engineering treatment model and a fracture criterion for butt joints used in the elastic state. To estimate the butt tensile strength in the plastic state, it is necessary to find the limit load and the elastic free edge stress intensity factor. A limit load for a joint of rectangular cross - section is found. Using this solution and a known solution for the elastic free - edge stress intensity factor, the dependence of the butt strength on its dimensions is predicted.
