Abstract
Various alternative criteria of fracturing are discussed, as used to estimate the maximum carrying capacity of structures. With special reference to a stratified medium, a comparison is made between the applicability of a criterion of generalized normal separation and the criterion suggested by Novozhilov. It has been demonstrated that, while the former criterion may produce inconsistencies, the latter provides satisfactory results.
