Abstract
This text explores the dialectic between military recruitment and underdevelopment in the rainfed area of the Punjab as it unfolded under colonial capitalism in the aftermath of the Great Revolt of 1857. The product of original fieldwork in the Barani areas of the Punjab, it analyzes the localized processes of colonial political economy, drawn from a diverse body of literature in comparative development, sociology, anthropology, political economy, and economic history.
