Abstract
This article discusses representations of Western American deserts in literature and photography of the past 150 years, focusing on writers and photographers who have been drawn into an ethical relationship with deserts that demands the preservation of landscape, flora and fauna. The essay combines literary history, personal narrative and creative photography.
