Abstract
This article assesses the construction, characteristics and reception of a Nazi pantheon of heroes. It explores the relationship between villains and heroes in the internal dynamics of Nazi ideology before turning to consider three questions. First, did Nazism generate a fundamental transformation of the German national pantheon of heroes? Second, did the Nazis have a cohesive vision of who should populate that pantheon, and why? Third, was non- and anti-Nazi hero-worship obliterated in the Third Reich?
