Abstract
The article summarises the principle methods currently in use for supporting chemical content on Web pages, and introduces the new <object> element which is part of the HTML4 and XHTML specifications. Despite claiming support for HTML 4, several recently released browsers do not correctly support this element. The role of XML-based markup languages is briefly introduced in the conclusions.
