Abstract

While the number of e-scooter sharing companies around the world is increasing day-by-day, the use of e-scooters is becoming an issue that needs to be handled carefully in terms of the health and safety of all road users. We look at the evidence on their effect on health. There are injuries from collisions but most harm is to themselves & then to pedestrians. There is also evidence e-scooter journeys replace 50-88% vehicle journeys. Older & disabled pedestrians feel especially anxious around them. Overall, there needs to be more research on motivations, attitudes, perceptions and personality traits of e-scooter users. Key issues of regulation, enforcement, training and legitimacy of use also need further discussion.
