Abstract
When individuals become passive about a situation that could be detrimental to their well-being following a previous exposure to a similar unavoidable event. Such a sense of helplessness is believed to have been adaptive in many circumstances over the course of evolutionary history but is likely to be regarded as much more problematic in the modern world due to the evolutionarily novel existence of numerous potential avenues of recourse that were conceivably unavailable in general during the prehistoric era.
