Abstract

This paper has two broad aims: to give an appreciation of the nature and scale of the problems that concern automatic error recovery and to outline the objectives and role of the authors' current research programme. By reviewing topics relating to the current project it is hoped that the wider issues will be exposed and clarified. Some of the main research issues facing advanced software for the control of on-line automation are discussed in the context of a current study.
