Abstract

This work sets out to clarify those provisions of the law which bear upon social services departments. The new law relating to children under the Children Act 1989 is covered in depth and includes: parental responsibility; welfare of the child; children in need; emergency protection orders; police powers; treatment of children in care; nurseries; and child minders. Community care provisions are included under the National Health and Community Care Act 1990 and covers the care of the sick, elderly and disabled; registration and regulation of independent sector care - residential homes, nursing homes and mental nursing homes. The book also covers adoption, court protection, enduring powers of attorney, court structure and accountability of social workers, their powers and duties.
