Abstract

This chapter provides a detailed account of the institutional and legal structures of the Andean Community, one of the oldest sub-regional organisations in Latin America. The structures and the legal system developed by the organisation resemble and take into account the structures and functions of the European Union. However, the legal system developed by the Andean Community does not reach the same level of sophistication as the European model. The chapter also considers some of the emerging issues that are linked to the evolution of the integration process in the Andean region, and that show some similarities with the European Union model. There are also some reforms and processes that are taken into consideration at the end, in light of the emerging integration processes which affect most Latin American countries.
