Abstract

The first three chapters, authored by me, set the historical and theoretical context that led to the establishment of the Peacock Committee in 1984.The other chapters are contributions by members of the Committee (Sir Alan Peacock and Sir Samuel Brittan) and academics with a specialist interest in the origins, nature and implications of the Committee (Prof.R.Collins, Ms J.Jones, Dr.A.McNicholas, Prof.J.Seaton, Prof K.Williams) and one by a key figure in the development of the debates about broadcasting in the 1970s and early 1980s Peter Jay, formerly of the Times.
