N2 - Book Abstract Title: Theatre since the 1990s The volume addresses the return of the dramatist to the European theatre since the mid-1990s. Beginning with the British avant-garde of instantly written, aggressive in-yer-face dramatic texts by Sarah Kane and Mark Ravenhill, text becomes once more a theatrical force to be reckoned with as many contemporary directors like Rene Pollesch also write their own plays. Global crises are discussed and playwrights address the pressing political issues of our time, although many of these texts lack direct political engagement. The act of instantaneous playwriting thus appears as an effort to decidedly construct reality as to affirm theatre's social relevance in times of crisis. The volume presents articles by renowned theatre and drama scholars on the topic from a cross-cultural perspective. Chapter Abstract Title: Variations of Realism: Topics and Tendencies of Contemporary Theatre between Glamour, the New Bourgeoisie and Documentary Drama The article summarizes tendencies in contemporary theatre by discussing productions of the 2006 European Biennale "New Plays from Europe". It critically examines a recent resurgence of new bourgeois realism and its conservative gender roles in Thomas Ostermeier's productions of Ibsen's "Nora" and "Hedda Gabler" as well as Biljana Srbljanovic's "Heuschrecken". Despite its effective updating of realist conventions to contemporary media society, contemporary realist theatre does not (re)present the critical edge, which these performances and their authors often proclaim. Similarly, tendencies of new documentary drama appear to bemoan rather than effectively challenge and change the critique of global capitalism and its negative effects.
