Abstract

The article suggests that the Welsh bresych 'cabbage' is more likely not a development of the borrowed Old Irish form of braisech, as many researchers believe, but can be considered as a variant of the regular Welsh form of bresyg (<lat. Brassicae) with a hemination that could transmit negative or contemptuous speaker's attitude to cabbage. Keywords: Welsh lexicography, inter-Celtic borrowings, medieval Welsh poetry.
