The study’s purpose is to establish the extent to which colour-printing technologies were used in botanical illustration in the latter half of the long-nineteenth-century. Hand-colouring of monochrome images dominated botanical illustration in the eighteenth-century and in some quarters continued through the nineteenth-century into the twentieth. The prevalence and extent of this practice is measured.
