Abstract
Purpose: This study examines the impact of the epidemicon the sustainability and development of sports tourism in Abu Dhabi, using the Sports Tourism Management Model and related theoretical frameworks. It evaluates the existing support strategies and identifies the additional measures that are required to ensure sustainable re-growth and resilience in the period of time. Based on the findings of the study, it offers key recommendations to guide for improvedstrategies for the sports tourism sector in Abu Dhabi.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The research adopts a qualitative methodology, analyzing data collected through interviews from key officials associated with the sports tourism sector in Abu Dhabi. The study employs theoretical frameworks, including the Sports Tourism Management Model, Sustainability Theory, and System Model for Sports Tourism, to interpret the findings, aligned with the thematic analysis of the interviews, and propose personalized
strategies for the sports tourism sector of Abu Dhabi.
Findings & Discussion: The study finds that Abu Dhabi has employed effective crisis management strategies during the epidemic, such as bio-secure bubbles, financial support for stakeholders, and technological innovations like digital health passports. However, gaps remain in areas such as community engagement, event diversification, and sustainable practices. The research highlights the need for advanced crisis management frameworks, increased public-private collaboration, and investments in health and safety infrastructure to enhance its resilience and sustainability.
Research Limitations/Implications: The study is limited to qualitative data and focuses solely on Abu Dhabi, which may affect the generalizability of findings. Future research could incorporate quantitative data and comparative analysis with other sports tourism destinations.Contribution to Theory and Practical Implications: This study contributes theoretically by contextualizing established sports tourism models within Abu Dhabi’s unique environment. Practically, it develops guidelines focusing on diversification of offerings, technology adoption, and enhanced crisis preparedness, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030 to ensure resilience, sustainability, and long-term growth of the sports tourism sector
post- epidemic as well as post-pandemic.
