Abstract

Happiness at workplace is a concept that is being widely researched globally in a bid to develop better understanding about its implications on organizational and employee’s performance. The amount of research on this topic in the context of UAE organizations is very limited. To bridge this gap in the literature, the researcher conducted a study to explore the concept of employee happiness in relation to UAE public sector organisations Furthermore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of current initiatives and strategies that are being implemented by the target organization to ensure employee happiness and to identify the factors that are affecting employee happiness levels within the target organization. This chosen public sector organization for this study was Federal Demographic Council of UAE.

To conduct this study, the researcher employed a mixed methods approach, and, in this approach, quantitative data collection tools (survey questionnaire) was used to gather responses from functional employees whereas qualitative data collection tool (semi-structured interviews) were conducted with top management and HR of the target organization. A total of 103 responses to survey questionnaire were gathered whereas 07 interviews were conducted. The gathered data was analysed using statistical techniques in SPSS.

The research findings showed that there is a direct relationship between employee happiness and their performance. It was identified that employees who were satisfied and happy had higher level of performance as compared to unhappy employees. Furthermore, research findings showed that the target organization is employing various strategies to ensure the happiness of employees in the short run such as monetary awards, appreciation certificates etc. whereas employees were of the opinion that happiness in personal life, organizational culture and job security are far more important factors towards ensuring their happiness. Based on the study findings, researcher developed a guideline document to help the target organization improve the happiness and satisfaction level of its employees in an effective and efficient manner.

The current research was limited in scale as the gathered data was only from one public sector organization. To develop a better understanding about the factors that can influence employee happiness, the conducted study could be expanded to gather data from at least 3-5 public sector organizations of UAE.
