Abstract

Soda-lime-silicate glasses containing low concentrations of chromium have been investigated using Cr K-edge X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). The synthesised glasses were bombarded with protons at 10.8 and 20MeV to induce structural damage and simulate irradiation in a extraplanetary environment. Post-irradiation, glasses containing 1.5 percent Cr2O3 showed signicant damage at high proton energy, which presented as an increase in the Cr(VI)/Crtotal ratio. Bond distances for Cr(III)-O and Cr(VI)-O were calculated from the tting of experimental EXAFS data.
